The Tanganyika Lakeshore Marathon is not just another race. This is  a rare African destination experience crafted for the adventurous few. Imagine running along the shores of Lake Tanganyika, one of the deepest and oldest freshwater lakes on the continent, where every step brings you closer to untouched landscapes and breathtaking panoramas.

This is a small-field, curated event, limited to just 20 runners, ensuring a personal, immersive experience rather than a crowded race. Along the way, you will  encounter the vibrant culture and traditions of Burundi, creating memories that last far beyond the finish line.

With safety, support and expert logistics handled by FogAdventures, you can focus on the run, the scenery and the adventure itself.

This marathon is more than a race. This is  part of our mission to expand marathon culture across Africa, connecting runners to extraordinary destinations while leaving a positive footprint on the communities we visit.

Stretching across the heart of Africa, Lake Tanganyika is not just a body of water, the lake is a living geological monument which  forms natural borders between Burundi, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia, making the lake one of the most geographically significant lakes on the continent.

Lake Tanganyika is one of the deepest lakes in the world, plunging more than 1,400 meters at its lowest point and is widely regarded as one of the oldest freshwater lakes on Earth, estimated to be millions of years old. When you run along its shores, you are quite literally moving beside ancient history.

Lake Tanganyika is also home to extraordinary biodiversity, with hundreds of fish species found nowhere else in the world. Its ecosystem supports lakeside communities whose lives have revolved around its waters for generations.

Historically, the lake served as a critical artery for regional trade routes and later became strategically important during the colonial era, linking inland Africa to global commerce. Explorers, traders and empires once navigated these waters. During the marathon , you will run beside them.

And your experience will not be limited to the shoreline. Participants will also enjoy a sunset cruise on this Great Lake, gliding across its vast waters as the sky turns gold and crimson over Burundi’s hills. A moment of stillness and reflection after the effort of the marathon.

To race here is to do more than complete 42.2 kilometers. This is to engage with geology, history, ecology, culture and the quiet majesty of one of Africa’s greatest natural treasures.

1) Half Day Immersion Tour of Bujumbura Where the Mountains Fall Into the Lake.

Our base city, Bujumbura, sits dramatically between steep green mountains and the vast blue of Lake Tanganyika. The city tour reveals the Livingstone - Stanley monument, the Independence Square, markets, lakeside neighborhoods, and the roads that will carry you on race morning. You do not just pass through Bujumbura. You move within the city and understand the terrain before you run the city.

2) Sunset Cruise to Rusizi National Park

As evening approaches on marathon day, you will transition from rhythm to serenity. Cruise along the Rusizi River inside Rusizi National Park, perfectly timed for sunset. Watch hippos surface in the golden light, spot Nile crocodiles along the riverbanks and enjoy abundant birdlife in the wetlands. The calm water, glowing skies and silhouettes of wildlife create a magical closing to the day.

3) Climbing the Green Highlands to the Tea & Coffee Plantations.

We travel into Burundi’s rolling highlands where tea and coffee farms stretch across emerald hills. Here, mist clings to the slopes in the early hours. Workers move through rows of carefully tended plants. The air smells rich and earthy. You will see firsthand how Burundi’s most important exports are cultivated and how hillside agriculture connects remote communities to the global market.

This is quiet strength. This is endurance in another form. And after running 42.2km, you will  recognize both the strength and the endurance.

4) Gishora Drum Sanctuary Where You  Step into the Royal Heartbeat of Burundi.

At Gishora, you will encounter sacred drums once used during royal coronations. They are powerful symbols of unity and kingship. These are not ordinary instruments, they were the voice of the kingdom.

You will  experience a live performance by the legendary Royal Drummers. The drums are thunderous, they have synchronized rhythms and the drummers have athletic choreography and breathtaking energy. They tell  stories about   Burundi’s monarchy and traditions. You won’t just hear the drums, you will feel them.

UNESCO Recognition

The Royal Drumming of Burundi is officially inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The sanctuary itself is on Burundi’s UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.

This is a globally recognized living heritage

and proudly preserved. A visit to Gishora is not just a stop on the itinerary. This is an encounter with history, rhythm and identity.

5) Sunrise Start at Tanganyika Lakeshore Marathon.

Lining up at the start of the Tanganyika Lakeshore Marathon as the sun rises over Lake Tanganyika is pure magic. The air is cool. The lake is calm. Runners stand quietly in anticipation as golden light spills across the water. Shoes shuffle. Watches beep. Hearts steady. Then the countdown begins. You surge forward with the rising sun at your side and  42.2km ahead, the shoreline glowing and a memory already being made.

A marathon is special but a sunrise marathon on the shores of Lake Tanganyika is unforgettable.

This is not simply a marathon in Burundi. This is a five-day movement across landscapes shaped by ancient water, royal rhythm, fertile highlands and rising sun. You will run beside Lake Tanganyika at dawn. You will hear the thunder of drums in Gishora Drum Sanctuary. You will stand on tea-covered hills and understand the patience of cultivation. You will explore Gitega and move through the streets of Bujumbura before you ever lace up on race morning. When you leave, the medal will be small compared to the memory. A maximum of Twenty runners will experience this. The lake has been there for millions of years. Your opportunity will not.

This is an expedition to one of Africa’s most storied landscapes.

Five days.

Four nights.

Twenty runners.

One ancient lake.

Anchored on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Burundi, this experience blends endurance, exploration, and cultural depth.

Day 1: Arrival at the Edge of the Lake

Arrive in Bujumbura, where mountains descend into vast blue waters.

Transfer to your lakeside base.

At 7:00 PM, we gather for a Welcome Dinner.

Briefing. Introductions. Intention-setting.

The lake stretches into the distance and you  begin to understand where you are.

Day 2: Ride the Shores

Today, you explore before you race.

A half-day guided immersion tour includes:

• A city tour of Bujumbura

• A scenic drive tracing the curves of Lake Tanganyika

• Stops along the shoreline where fishermen launch wooden boats at dawn

You see the road you will run.

You feel the terrain.

You understand the environment.

The Afternoon will be free and at leisure for you  to rest, hydrate and prepare.

Tomorrow, you move.

Day 3: Marathon at Sunrise | Cruise at Dusk

At 6:00 AM, the expedition turns physical.

The marathon begins at sunrise along the coastal road.

Ancient waters on one side. Rolling hills on the other.

An initial 9 out-and-back settles your rhythm.

Then the longer 8 out and back  stretch unfolds  steadily, purposefully and raw.

You are not running through a city. You are running along history.

After the finish, you  rest and recover.

At sunset, we board a private boat and glide across Lake Tanganyika. The same waters you ran beside now surround you.

Gold sky. Still surface. Quiet accomplishment.

Few marathons end with a lake crossing at dusk.

Day 4: Into the Heart of Burundi

Today, the expedition deepens.

We travel inland to explore:

• A Tea or Coffee Plantation, where Burundi’s hills produce some of Africa’s finest exports

• The revered Gishora Drum Sanctuary near Gitega where royal drums once signaled kings and ceremonies

• The city of Gitega itself, Burundi’s political capital and cultural heartbeat

This is not sightseeing.

This is understanding.

In the evening, we return for a Celebration Dinner where we will share  stories and give feedbacks.

Day 5: Departure

Breakfast and Transfers to the airport.

You leave with more than a medal. You leave having moved across geography, culture, and history.

The Tanganyika Lakeshore Marathon begins at 6:00 AM, just as first light breaks over Lake Tanganyika. Runners will set off at sunrise, with the calm waters reflecting the morning sky. A powerful and peaceful start before the rhythm of the race settles in.

The course follows a coastal road, offering  lakeside views and steady footing on most of the course. The terrain allows runners to focus on pacing while absorbing the raw beauty of Burundi’s shoreline.

The race format is designed as a structured out-and-back route:

• An initial 9 km out-and-back section to settle into rhythm and greet the lake at dawn.

• Followed by a longer 8 km out-and-back section, repeated to complete the marathon distance.

This layout ensures clear direction, consistent support access and regular contact with fellow runners in this intimate, curated field.

With a total elevation profile of approximately 336 meters, the route provides enough variation to stay engaging without being overly punishing, balanced, scenic and achievable.

Aid stations will be positioned at both designated turnaround points, ensuring reliable hydration and support throughout the race.

Safety remains a priority, with monitored sections and structured support provided by the FogAdventures team.

Participants will have an 8-hour cut-off time, allowing space for determined finishers to complete their journey along one of Africa’s most historic lakes.

This is not just a marathon course. This is 42.2 kilometers of lakeshore sunrise, steady momentum and purposeful adventure.
